Eleven-year-old Harper Sanson is ready for winter’s break. Oh yeah, she’s been looking forward to rubbing her California adventure in her friends’ faces on social media when mom says plans have changed. No, she’s not going to her dad’s, and she’s not going with mom to Europe with mom’s sleazy Wall St. boyfriend Earl. Nope, Harper’s going to her creepy, crazy grandpa Norbert's house in frozen Connecticut. The recluse novelist has only seen Harper a few times, and Harper? She’s sick to her stomach. What was supposed to be the best winter’s break ever is now going to be a nightmare!ONCE UPON A WINTER’S BREAK is told in the first person by Harper herself. This reimagining of A CHRISTMAS CAROL in modern day New York and Connecticut finds our young heroine learning one of life’s great lessons: don’t ever judge a man by his green socks and yellow beanie hat.Harper wakes up the next day after her mom leaves to discover her grandpa’s gross and boring, and his house is haunted. She’s already on her phone, ready to get a ride back to the city! But, fate intervenes, and Harper travels back to Hawaii in 1961 to meet her grandparents as they fall in love as teens. She then arrives as a ghost in present-day Texas to see her deadbeat dad (who turns out to actually love her). Harper also meets Mr. Pennytop and Zelda, the embodiments of Time and Death, who tell her the real reason why she's been chosen for this supernatural trial. And finally, Harper flies to the future where she becomes a mom herself (and experiences the breakiest of breakdowns).Throughout her adventure, Harper struggles with confronting the reasons behind her snarky exterior: despite all her protestations, she's not ready to grow up. She does love her mom—and dad, and yes, even her crazy grandpa Norbert.
